Knicks’ 2020 Draft Blunder: Why Obi Toppin Pick Was a Mistake

The intricate world of professional sports often sees front office decisions come under intense scrutiny, and the New York Knicks are no exception. While the organization has recently orchestrated significant, foundational moves, not every past decision has yielded the desired outcome, a reality keenly felt concerning their 2020 NBA Draft selection.

A prime example of such a misstep, according to team insiders, was the Knicks’ choice of Obi Toppin with the eighth overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Despite his collegiate success, Toppin found his path to substantial minutes consistently blocked by the presence of All-NBA talent Julius Randle, a clear challenge for any developing player within the New York Knicks team roster.

This positional logjam ultimately led to Toppin’s trade to the Indiana Pacers for minimal return, a move that has since proven bittersweet for Knicks fans. Obi Toppin has flourished into an important rotation player for the Eastern Conference champion Pacers, notably playing a role in their postseason elimination of New York in two consecutive seasons.

Fortunately for the New York Knicks, Julius Randle’s ascendance to an All-NBA level talent provided an unexpected silver lining, compensating for the Toppin miss. This unforeseen development not only bolstered the Knicks’ immediate competitiveness but also paved the way for a transformative trade, bringing in Karl-Anthony Towns and significantly elevating the team’s ceiling and overall team roster strength.

With key strategic moves continuing, the New York Knicks have recently secured the long-term services of Mikal Bridges through an extension, a pivotal piece in their championship puzzle. This commitment further solidifies their core, allowing the front office to shift its focus towards meticulously finalizing the remaining spots on their 18-man team roster for the upcoming season.

Attention now turns to the crucial decision for the final team roster spot, with Ian Begley reporting the Knicks are weighing options between Ben Simmons and Landry Shamet. While a recent agreement with 2025 second-round pick Mo Diawara adds another young talent, the team remains hard-capped, necessitating a careful balance of talent and financial flexibility, especially concerning players like Kevin McCullar Jr.

From a strategic standpoint, the New York Knicks could greatly benefit from an additional versatile defender, a role where Ben Simmons, when healthy, excels. Simmons’ ability to guard multiple positions and contribute without demanding the ball perfectly complements the offensive prowess of stars like Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, making him a tantalizing, albeit injury-prone, addition to the team roster.

Conversely, Landry Shamet offers a different but valuable skillset as a consistent veteran shooter off the bench, providing essential spacing. While the 2020 NBA Draft decision regarding Obi Toppin may remain a point of reflection, the New York Knicks have undeniably transformed their fortunes since, executing a flurry of impactful moves that position them ever closer to their ultimate goal of an Eastern Conference title.
