Long-Serving Chair Bids Farewell to Lancashire Children’s Hospice After Impactful Tenure

After an extraordinary nine-year tenure, the esteemed chair of a beloved Lancashire children’s hospice is preparing to step down, concluding a period marked by profound growth and compassionate leadership. Her departure signifies the end of an era for the organization, to which she dedicated nearly a third of its existence, leaving an indelible mark on the community it serves through dedicated hospice care.

Under her unwavering guidance, the charity not only achieved a coveted ‘outstanding’ rating from regulators but also significantly enhanced Derian House’s reputation as a vanguard in pediatric children’s charity services. Her strategic vision and steadfast commitment were pivotal in solidifying the hospice’s standing as a beacon of excellence and comfort within the Lancashire community.

A testament to her impactful leadership, Karen spearheaded transformative initiatives including the extensive £1.7 million refurbishment of the hospice building and its serene gardens in 2019. This monumental project ensured that the facilities remained state-of-the-art, providing a nurturing and uplifting environment for the children and families who rely on Derian House.

Further demonstrating her innovative approach, she was instrumental in developing the pioneering “Derian on Holiday” service. This unique program offered families precious, cost-free opportunities to spend quality time together away from the challenges of daily life, embodying the charity’s holistic approach to family support and well-being.

Before dedicating nearly a decade to the hospice, Karen enjoyed a distinguished 35-year career in healthcare leadership, culminating in her role as chief people officer at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust before her retirement two years prior. Her deep professional background provided a rich foundation for her contributions to Derian House.

Reflecting on her journey, Karen shared a personal connection to the hospice, recalling her nephew’s use of its services and her first visit twenty years ago during an open day. She fondly spoke of the holiday lodges, emphasizing how these free annual getaways provided much-needed respite for Derian families.

Expressing mixed emotions about her departure, she acknowledged the significant role Derian House has played in her life for nearly a decade, cherishing countless memories. Looking ahead, Karen anticipates spending more time with her husband, Barry, their two dogs, Alfie and Mitzi, and other cherished family and friends, embracing a well-deserved retirement tribute.

Karen articulated immense pride in Derian House and its dedicated staff and supporters, deeming her time as chair an “absolute privilege.” She extended heartfelt gratitude to her fellow Trustees for their selfless contributions to such a vital cause, expressing her fervent hope that the charity will continue its remarkable growth and prosperity in the future, maintaining its critical role in the Lancashire community.
