Trump Blasts Democrats Over Nominee Delays, Cites Washington, Lincoln

President Donald Trump recently intensified his criticism of Senate Democrats, accusing them of unprecedented obstruction regarding his administrative and judicial nominees. His frustration stems from what he describes as a deliberate ‘circus’ aimed at slow-walking critical appointments, a situation he dramatically illustrated by suggesting even revered historical figures like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln would struggle to gain approval under current conditions.

Trump highlighted this through a graphic shared on Truth Social, which starkly contrasted his second term’s confirmation rates with previous administrations. The data revealed a significant decline in nominees approved by voice vote or unanimous consent, a sharp departure from his first term and the faster approval rates seen under Presidents Joe Biden, George W. Bush, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, underscoring the severe political gridlock.

The former president’s strong assertion that Democrats are “refusing to approve some of the best Nominees in the History of our Country” underscores the deep partisan divide affecting the confirmation process. His hyperbolic comparison to Washington and Lincoln served to emphasize the perceived historical anomaly of the current political climate, alleging that such obstruction has “never happened before.”

Adding weight to Trump’s claims, the graphic originated from the office of Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a key figure in Republican strategy. Thune publicly used the chart to criticize Democrats on the Senate floor, warning that the current pace would prevent Trump’s administration from being fully staffed before his term concludes.

Thune expressed grave concerns about the sustainability of the ongoing delays, stating, “This isn’t sustainable. We can’t keep on this track.” He signaled a strong Republican determination to either compel Democrats to cooperate or find alternative methods to expedite confirmations, indicating a potential escalation in legislative challenges.

Further exacerbating the tension, Senator Chuck Grassley, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has been urged to reconsider the committee’s “blue slip” tradition. This custom typically requires approval from both senators of a nominee’s home state before a judicial appointment can advance, a process some Republicans view as a tool for Democratic obstruction in judicial appointments.

In a separate Truth Social post, Trump directly appealed to Grassley, acknowledging his role in the senator’s re-election and urging him to “solve the ‘Blue Slip’ problem with a mere flick of the pen.” Trump explicitly named several prominent Democrats, including Schumer, Warner, Kaine, Booker, and Schiff, labeling them “SLEAZEBAGS ALL,” and accusing them of an “ironclad stoppage of Great Republican Candidates,” intensifying the rhetoric surrounding the partisan battle over vital federal positions and the future of the administration.
