Venezuelan Detainees Allege Horrific Abuse in El Salvador Prison

The silence has been broken: Venezuelan nationals, recently released from El Salvador’s infamous Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) and repatriated, are now bravely recounting harrowing tales of alleged abuse endured within its walls. This powerful testimony sheds light on the grim realities faced by those caught in the complex web of international migration and detention.

Among those speaking out is Mery Mogollón, a 36-year-old former professional soccer player, who left Venezuela seeking asylum in the U.S. and found himself swept into the Salvadoran prison system. His personal narrative, alongside others, paints a vivid picture of the challenging journey and unexpected confinement faced by Venezuelan migrants.

Detainees describe their arrival at CECOT being greeted with chilling words: “Welcome to El Salvador, you sons of bitches,” and being told they had “arrived at the Terrorist Confinement Center. Hell on earth.” Such accounts highlight the psychological and emotional impact of their incarceration, emphasizing the severe nature of the alleged mistreatment. The specific location of “La Isla” is frequently mentioned as a site of particular cruelty.

Andry José Hernández Romero, a 31-year-old hairdresser, fled Venezuela due to fear of persecution as a gay man, only to face further alleged human rights abuses within the prison. His story underscores the vulnerability of individuals seeking refuge and the profound trauma inflicted during their detention, adding a poignant layer to the collective detainee accounts.

Many of these individuals, including Mogollón, were part of a group of over 250 men accused of gang affiliation and sent to CECOT by the Trump administration in March. This controversial decision to transfer individuals, many of whom had not been convicted of crimes in the U.S., raises significant questions about the legal and ethical ramifications of such international transfers and contributes to the narrative surrounding their time in the El Salvador prison.

Internal data reportedly reveals that the Trump administration was aware that nearly 200 of the men sent to CECOT had not been convicted of any crimes in the U.S. This critical detail suggests a potential disregard for due process and the individual circumstances of the Venezuelan migrants, further complicating the narrative of their detention and release.

After enduring nearly four months of alleged human rights abuses, the men were eventually informed of their impending release. This unexpected freedom was part of a larger, complex international prisoner exchange, where Venezuela agreed to free 10 jailed Americans in return for the repatriation of these detainees. This exchange highlights the intricate diplomatic maneuvers involved in resolving such humanitarian situations.

The collective testimonies of these detainee accounts from CECOT offer a crucial glimpse into the often-hidden world of international detention and the profound impact on those caught within its system. Their stories serve as a stark reminder of the challenges inherent in Central American migration and the persistent need for vigilance regarding the treatment of all individuals, regardless of their migratory status.
