Brenna Bird Leads In-Depth University of Iowa DEI Investigation

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the University of Iowa’s compliance with state-mandated diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, a pivotal move propelled by public scrutiny and a direct appeal from Governor Kim Reynolds.

This significant inquiry follows recent controversies surrounding alleged “undercover” videos, which reportedly depicted University of Iowa employees discussing ongoing DEI efforts despite directives aimed at restricting such programs. Governor Reynolds publicly expressed her dismay, prompting her formal request for the Attorney General’s office to take action.

During her annual “Bird Barn Bash” fundraiser, Attorney General Bird affirmed her office’s unwavering commitment to thoroughly examining the situation. She reassured her supporters that the investigation into the University of Iowa DEI framework would be exhaustive, aiming to uncover all pertinent facts, while also prudently asking for patience from the public, underscoring the diligent time required to conduct a proper, lawful investigation.

Bird forcefully reiterated her stance on the state’s anti-DEI policy, emphasizing her dedication to upholding the ban on these initiatives across Iowa’s public universities. She articulated a clear philosophical position that taxpayer-funded education should focus on academic rigor and learning, rather than what she characterized as “indoctrination,” firmly aligning with conservative principles on educational governance.

The political weight of the Attorney General investigation was highlighted by prominent talk radio host Simon Conway, a staunch supporter who spoke at the event. Conway underscored the indispensable role of Bird in her current office, contrasting her proactive approach to the University of Iowa’s DEI issues with that of past administrations, suggesting her leadership is critical for navigating such complex policy challenges within Iowa politics.

Amidst ongoing speculation about her political trajectory, particularly following Governor Kim Reynolds’ announcement regarding her future political plans, Brenna Bird formally declared her intention to seek re-election for her current position as Iowa Attorney General in the 2026 election cycle.

Bird clarified that her decision to pursue another term stemmed from a deeply held conviction that significant work remains to be accomplished in her role. She articulated a vision of unfinished business within the Attorney General’s office, signaling her commitment to advancing key initiatives and continuing her dedicated service to the citizens of Iowa, rather than pursuing higher office at this juncture.
