Deion Sanders’ Health Battle: Colorado Trainer Lauren Askevold’s Crucial Role

Deion Sanders’ recent health challenges, involving a series of complex surgeries and a quiet battle with bladder cancer, have finally come to light, revealing the pivotal role played by Colorado Buffaloes trainer Lauren Askevold in his arduous recovery journey.

For months, speculation surrounded Coach Prime’s mysterious absence, later confirmed to be a testament to his silent fight against significant health concerns, including bladder cancer and chronic foot complications stemming from his illustrious playing career.

Askevold, a steadfast presence since Sanders’ arrival in Boulder in 2022, has been instrumental in navigating the coach through more than a dozen medical procedures, highlighting her deep commitment to his well-being beyond traditional athletic training.

Among the severe issues faced by Sanders were debilitating blood clots, which tragically led to the amputation of two toes, alongside a long-undiagnosed dislocated metatarsal and chronic turf toe, each contributing to immense physical adversity.

The trainer’s dedication extended to what she humorously referred to as “rubbing nubs,” or therapeutic foot massages, which she clarified as a necessary component of his post-surgical care and ongoing management of his unique anatomical challenges.

Despite these profound health setbacks, the University of Colorado demonstrated unwavering faith in Coach Prime, cementing their commitment with a substantial five-year, $54-million contract extension, underscoring his irreplaceable value to the program.

Now declared cancer-free and progressing remarkably in his recovery, Deion Sanders credits Lauren Askevold’s consistent care and the support of his medical team for his preparedness to lead the Colorado Buffaloes into his third season, symbolizing a triumphant return from adversity.

This narrative of resilience not only showcases the physical and mental fortitude required to overcome such significant health hurdles but also emphasizes the indispensable support system athletes rely on, from dedicated trainers to medical professionals, in their pursuit of excellence.
