Derrick White Inspires 100 Kids at Hillside Connection Youth Basketball Camp

Boston Celtics guard Derrick White, a revered NBA star with Colorado roots, recently returned to his home state to host a transformative youth basketball camp in partnership with Hillside Connection. This collaborative effort brought together approximately 100 enthusiastic first through eighth graders at Sierra High School in Colorado Springs, marking a significant event for the local community and aspiring young athletes.

White’s connection to Colorado runs deep, having played college basketball at both the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and the University of Colorado Boulder after attending Legend High School in Parker. His journey from local talent to an Olympic gold medalist and NBA champion with the Boston Celtics serves as a powerful testament to dedication and perseverance, making his presence at the camp particularly inspiring for the young participants.

During the impactful Saturday event on August 2, 2025, White personally coached the young basketball players, demonstrating fundamental skills such as defense, footwork, dribbling, shooting, and passing. Each child had the invaluable opportunity to interact directly with the Boston Celtics star, creating memorable moments and offering tangible lessons beyond the drills.

The camp was held in conjunction with Hillside Connection, a vital nonprofit founded by Terrell Brown. This organization is dedicated to serving more than 1,000 children annually, imparting not only essential basketball techniques but also crucial life skills, fostering holistic development within the Southeast Colorado Springs community.

Derrick White emphasized the profound personal satisfaction he derives from these interactions, noting that moments like the youth basketball camp resonate deeply with him. He expressed a desire to instill hope and confidence in the attendees, believing his own success can help young people recognize their inherent capabilities and pursue their dreams.

Terrell Brown, founder and president of Hillside Connection, expressed immense gratitude for White’s commitment and time, highlighting the significance of an NBA star of White’s caliber dedicating efforts to local youth. Brown underscored that the camp transcended mere athletic instruction, aiming instead to foster resilience and character.

Brown articulated the broader vision for the youth basketball camp, stating, “It’s about instilling hope in the youth, families and the community we serve.” He lauded White’s integrity, humility, and steadfast commitment, acknowledging that these qualities, alongside his impressive NBA accolades, establish him as a true icon for future generations.

Hillside Connection’s dedication to the Colorado Springs community extends beyond this single event, encompassing various camps and initiatives over the years, including the recent repaving of courts at Memorial Park in 2024. These sustained efforts by the nonprofit continue to provide invaluable opportunities for youth development and community enrichment.
