DOJ Official Who Okayed Russia Hoax Payouts Now Leads Anti-Trump Group

A former high-ranking Justice Department official, Brian Netter, who notably authorized significant taxpayer-funded settlements, has now transitioned to a leadership role within a prominent legal organization specifically targeting Donald Trump. This move raises questions about the intersection of government service, political affiliations, and the evolving landscape of legal activism in the United States. Netter’s journey from approving controversial payouts to spearheading anti-Trump litigation highlights the intricate web of power and influence in Washington.

During his tenure as Deputy Assistant Attorney General under Merrick Garland, Netter notably greenlit multi-million dollar settlements for former FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. Strzok, a central figure in the contentious “Russia collusion hoax” investigation, received $1.2 million, while Page, his former colleague, was awarded $800,000. These substantial payouts followed a lawsuit from the duo, who claimed their privacy was violated by the release of their scandal-laden government texts, sparking public debate over the allocation of taxpayer funds.

Netter now serves as the legal director for Democracy Forward, a left-leaning advocacy group established in 2017 with the explicit aim of challenging the Trump administration through extensive litigation. This organization proudly asserts it has initiated over one hundred legal actions against the 45th president, positioning itself as a formidable opponent in the political-legal arena and attracting attention for its persistent strategic efforts.

The board of Democracy Forward features a notable roster of influential Democratic figures, underscoring the group’s deep ties to the party’s establishment. Among its members are prominent names such as former Clinton campaign manager John Podesta, former Biden chief of staff Ron Klain, Vice President Kamala Harris’s sister Maya Harris, and seasoned Democratic strategist Mindy Myers, signaling a strong alignment with Democratic political objectives.

At the helm of Democracy Forward’s legal strategy is Marc Elias, a Democratic super-lawyer widely recognized for his contentious involvement in funding the Clinton campaign’s Russia collusion research through his law firm. Elias also played a pivotal role in the expansion of mail-in ballot initiatives during the tumultuous 2020 election cycle, further cementing his reputation as a key operative in high-stakes political battles.

Netter’s personal connections extend deeply into Democratic circles, notably through his marriage to Karen Dunn, a highly respected Democratic lawyer who has provided debate preparation for high-profile figures including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Kamala Harris. Their 2009 wedding was even officiated by current Attorney General Merrick Garland, illustrating the profound interconnectedness within this influential network.

Dunn’s professional background further reinforces these ties; she co-founded a law firm with Jeannie Rhee, an alumna of the contentious Mueller probe, who was instrumental in perpetuating narratives surrounding the Russia investigation. This firm later brought on another Mueller team member, Rush Atkinson, highlighting a consistent pattern of legal professionals with shared political backgrounds and past involvement in significant investigations.

Congressional Republicans previously sought transparency regarding the authorization of the sizable settlements for Strzok and Page, only to face resistance from the Biden Justice Department, which cited a lack of knowledge on the matter. This stonewalling has fueled concerns among critics who argue that the current administration exhibits a pattern of favoritism towards political allies while aggressively pursuing conservatives.

As James Fitzpatrick, director of the Center to Advance Security in America, stated, “The American people are rightly concerned about the Biden Administration’s targeting of conservatives while their political allies were given special treatment. These settlements are a prime example of the outrageous abuse of power endured by the American people under Joe Biden,” encapsulating the public and political scrutiny surrounding these events.
