F1 Rookie Boldly Names Best Driver: Verstappen or Hamilton?

A bold declaration from a rookie sensation in the high-octane world of Formula 1 has ignited passionate debate among fans and pundits alike regarding the sport’s greatest driver. Gabriel Bortoleto, currently navigating his inaugural F1 season, has unequivocally stated his choice for the pinnacle of motorsport talent, stirring considerable discussion by weighing in on the timeless comparison between two titans: Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Bortoleto’s conviction is not born of casual observation; he asserts that alongside the legendary Ayrton Senna, Max Verstappen stands as the ultimate driver in the sport’s storied history. This striking endorsement from a newcomer highlights the profound impact and undeniable prowess of the reigning world champion, offering a fresh perspective on the ongoing conversation about who truly deserves the ‘greatest of all time’ moniker within motorsport news.

Interestingly, the connection between the young Brazilian and the Dutch superstar runs deeper than mere admiration. Even before Bortoleto joined Sauber, Max Verstappen played a pivotal, behind-the-scenes role in advancing his career. This mentorship, reportedly fostered through shared interests like video games, saw Verstappen actively championing Bortoleto’s talent to influential figures across various F1 teams, underscoring a rare camaraderie among top F1 drivers.

Bortoleto recounted an encouraging encounter with Jonathan Wheatley, the Sauber team principal, who confirmed Verstappen’s positive influence. “Jonathan told me that even before I joined Sauber-Audi, Max was very positive about me,” Bortoleto shared, revealing the subtle yet significant support he received from one of the grid’s most dominant figures, a testament to Verstappen’s belief in the emerging F1 talent.

The rookie emphasized Verstappen’s quiet support, noting, “I know Max doesn’t usually talk about this himself, especially in front of the media, but it’s something he helped me with – talking about me to people in Formula 1.” This insight offers a rare glimpse into the competitive yet supportive ecosystem of top-tier F1 drivers, where genuine advocacy can significantly shape a burgeoning career.

Despite his promising start, Bortoleto has faced public scrutiny, notably being labeled a “B-standard” driver by Helmut Marko, a prominent advisor and young driver chief. However, Bortoleto met this assessment with remarkable resilience and an unwavering belief in his own potential. He acknowledged the comment, stating, “I’ve seen that [quote] and I love challenges,” showcasing a tenacious spirit crucial for navigating the demanding F1 landscape.

Bortoleto’s response to Marko’s critique was both measured and confident. He recognized Marko’s extensive experience in identifying and promoting talent within F1, acknowledging that the veteran advisor has “put a lot of talents in Formula 1, and has put a lot of wrong talents already in F1.” He expressed determination to prove Marko wrong through on-track performance, asserting that only his results, not media statements, would ultimately alter the perception of his abilities among F1 drivers.

But nothing I can say now in the media would change his mind, just my results on track, and I’m sure I’m going to prove him wrong at some point and, hopefully, he will admit this when I prove him wrong,” Bortoleto concluded. This resolute stance underscores the intense pressure and high stakes for young motorsport aspirants, highlighting the ultimate reliance on performance to validate their place among the elite.
