Freedom School Inspires Students: Summer Program Boosts Reading and Skills

The annual Freedom School summer program recently concluded with a celebratory finale, marking another successful season of fostering academic growth and a love for reading among its young participants in the Lima community.

This vital student enrichment initiative, designed to combat summer learning loss, engaged forty-four dedicated students in a comprehensive curriculum that blended reading literacy development with a rich array of culturally enriching activities. The program aims to ensure students return to school not just on par, but potentially ahead, ready to tackle new academic challenges through effective youth education.

A core philosophy of the Freedom School is to instill a deep-seated passion for reading, recognizing its foundational role in lifelong learning. By providing access to diverse literature and creating an engaging environment, the program actively works to prevent the typical academic slide often experienced during extended breaks from formal schooling.

The program’s effectiveness is often best observed through the eyes of its servant-leader interns, many of whom are graduates themselves. Charlie Drake, a Kent State student and former participant, shared how impactful it was to see the summer program from a new vantage point, appreciating the personal growth and self-discovery that reading new books offered.

Sharon Leslie, another dedicated intern, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the transformative power of the student enrichment experience. Their journey from students to mentors underscores the program’s success in cultivating not only academic prowess but also leadership qualities and a commitment to the Lima community.

Parents too recognize the profound benefits. Adrianna Lucas, whose son completed the program, expressed her hopes that the students gained a significant sense of independence and self-reliance through their participation, skills crucial for their development into confident young adults.

Lucas further emphasized the youth education program’s unique value, advocating for its expansion to reach even more children within the community. The Freedom School acts as a crucial support system, encouraging continued learning and personal development even after the traditional school year concludes.

With each passing year, the Freedom School continues to grow in impact and reach, consistently demonstrating its commitment to educational equity and student empowerment. The dedication of its organizers, educators, and community supporters promises a bright future for its young scholars.
