Leeds United manager Daniel Farke provided a candid and concerning assessment of his squad’s current state following their 1-1 draw with Villarreal, highlighting significant challenges with player availability and the urgent need for reinforcements as the new Premier League season looms.
The friendly fixture at Elland Road saw five key senior players notably absent from the squad: new goalkeeper Lucas Perri, right-back Jayden Bogle, defender Sebastiaan Bornauw, and wingers Daniel James and Jack Harrison, prompting immediate questions about the team’s depth and fitness.
Regarding individual concerns, Bornauw is reportedly on a “good path” in his recovery from a calf issue sustained early in the German training camp. However, Farke admitted greater “concern” over the fitness of Jayden Bogle, whose situation appears to be more problematic for the club.
Further impacting the offensive options, both Daniel James and Jack Harrison were sidelined with “light injury concerns.” These absences compounded the existing shortage of attacking talent, making the need for new additions even more critical for the upcoming rigorous league campaign.
Adding to the squad puzzle, young striker Mateo Joseph, though present at Elland Road, was explicitly excluded from Farke’s immediate plans. The manager stated he “cannot afford to have a distracted player” within the group, signaling his desire for full commitment and focus from every individual.
The collective player absences starkly highlighted Leeds United’s most pressing requirement in the remaining transfer window. The club is actively pursuing a starting striker, has made significant efforts to secure a left winger, and has inquired about a number 10, specifically Leicester City’s talented midfielder Bilal El Khannouss.
Farke did not mince words, acknowledging the squad’s current deficiencies. He remarked, “We know we need a bit more quality,” lamenting the loss of “standout player” Manor Solomon and candidly admitting, “We’re not ready for Premier League level” in terms of offensive prowess, even when compared to their Championship promotion squad.
Despite demonstrating the capacity to “grind out results for one or two games,” Farke emphasized the paramount importance of securing new signings swiftly. He stressed that key personnel are working tirelessly to bring in additions as quickly as possible, with the ultimate goal of assembling a truly competitive Premier League squad following the first international break.
