Morton FC’s 150-Year Legacy Honored: Key Figures Receive Special Recognition

The celebrated Greenock Morton Football Club marks a monumental 150-year journey, commemorating its enduring legacy by honoring pivotal figures whose contributions shaped its rich history and impact on the Inverclyde community.

This significant recognition stems from an initiative by Morton Club Together (MCT), the fans’ investment group holding 90 percent ownership of the club, who partnered with the club to issue a limited edition commemorative coin earlier this year as part of the extensive 150th anniversary celebrations.

While a majority of the 150 specially minted coins were released to the public, a select handful were thoughtfully reserved. These exclusive pieces have now been ceremoniously presented to individuals and organizations deemed instrumental in the club’s vibrant past, or those closely linked to Morton’s profound influence on life within the region over its century and a half existence, embodying true Sports Recognition.

Roddy McDowall, a colleague of George and an MCT member, explained the deliberate decision to produce 150 coins, with a specific allocation set aside to pay homage to “notable contributors.” This meticulous process ensured that each recipient truly reflected the spirit of the club’s journey.

The exhaustive shortlist of potential honorees was carefully refined to a distinguished group of seven. The coin bearing the auspicious number one was fittingly bestowed upon the Football Club History itself, a symbol of its foundational role and ongoing presence in Scottish Football.

Among the other six recipients, one coin was presented to Crawford Rae, the esteemed owner of Golden Casket, acknowledging the Rae family’s invaluable dedication over nearly a quarter-century, which was crucial in safeguarding the club’s survival after a particularly challenging period.

Another poignant presentation saw Mark McGraw accept a coin on behalf of the McGraw family, a tribute to his late father, Allan McGraw. Allan’s legendary tenure as both a player and manager solidified his iconic status within the Greenock Morton FC narrative, his contributions forever etched in the club’s annals.

These heartfelt acknowledgements underscore the profound connection between the club, its historical figures, and the broader Inverclyde Community, reinforcing the principle that a football club’s true strength lies not just in its present successes but in the celebration and preservation of its storied past, ensuring its enduring place in the heart of its supporters.
