NC State Bolsters Linebacker Room with All-MEAC Transfer A.J. Richardson

North Carolina State University’s football program has made a significant move to bolster its defensive ranks, welcoming a proven talent from the transfer portal to fortify the linebacker room. This strategic acquisition comes at a crucial time, addressing key departures and injecting immediate experience and playmaking ability into the Wolfpack’s defense.

The offseason saw the Wolfpack navigate considerable changes, with 23 players entering the transfer portal, including starting linebacker Kamal Bonner, who has since joined the Miami Hurricanes. Such departures necessitated a focused effort to replenish the roster with high-caliber athletes capable of making an instant impact in the highly competitive ACC Football conference.

Among the four linebackers secured via the transfer portal, A.J. Richardson stands out as a particularly impactful addition. During his time at his previous institution, Richardson quickly established himself as a dominant force, demonstrating exceptional instincts and a relentless pursuit of the ball. His collegiate career began with immediate success, proving that star ratings are secondary to on-field performance.

As a freshman, Richardson participated in eleven games, earning seven starts where he consistently showcased his defensive prowess. He led his team with an impressive 69 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss, a testament to his disruptive presence. His outstanding play did not go unnoticed, earning him FCS Freshman All-American honors and a spot on the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference All-Second Team Defense.

Richardson elevated his game even further in his sophomore campaign, reaching elite status within the MEAC. He amassed a remarkable 100 tackles, leading the entire conference in the category, which earned him a prestigious All-MEAC First Team selection. Analytical data from Pro Football Focus further highlighted his proficiency, crediting him with a league-leading 37 run defensive stops, underscoring his capability against the ground game.

Committing to the NC State Wolfpack in December, Richardson now integrates into a linebacker unit that boasts considerable depth and promising young talent. The presence of seasoned veterans such as redshirt senior Sean Brown, the leading tackler from the previous season, and redshirt senior Caden Fordham ensures a competitive yet supportive environment for the new arrival.

The addition of A.J. Richardson significantly enhances NC State’s defensive capabilities, providing an experienced and highly productive player to an already talented group. His proven track record of tackling and disrupting offenses at a high level suggests he will be a critical component in the Wolfpack’s strategy to navigate the rigors of ACC play and elevate their defensive performance in the upcoming College Football season. This move signals a strong commitment from the program to maintaining a formidable defense.
