Newcastle Airport Buries Time Capsule for 90th Anniversary Celebration

Newcastle Airport has commemorated its landmark 90th anniversary with a truly unique gesture, burying a time capsule designed to offer future generations a fascinating glimpse into life at the facility and the wider North East community in 2025.

Central to this historic initiative were the enthusiastic youngsters from Ponteland Beavers, whose active participation ensured the capsule was filled with poignant mementos. Their contributions ranged from personal letters detailing their visions of future travel to an assortment of cherished Beavers memorabilia, including badges and certificates, all destined to be unearthed years from now, highlighting valuable youth involvement.

The carefully curated collection sealed within the time capsule offered a rich tapestry of contemporary life. Among the significant inclusions were detailed maps extracted from the Airport’s ambitious 2040 Masterplan, providing a strategic blueprint for its anticipated growth and development over the coming 15 years, underscoring its commitment to regional progress.

Further encapsulating the present day were a diverse array of items: a modern travel catalogue, a daily newspaper capturing the headlines of 2025, and even a cocktail menu from the Airport’s popular Aster & Thyme bar. These everyday objects provide a snapshot of commerce, media, and leisure, reflecting the daily rhythm of the Newcastle Airport environment.

Commemorative lanyards, tote bags, and pens, distributed to staff in celebration of the Airport’s significant birthday, were also preserved. These items not only mark the 90th anniversary but also offer a tangible connection to the dedicated workforce that has shaped the Airport’s journey over nine decades.

Alice Andreasen, chief corporate affairs officer at Newcastle Airport, emphasized the Airport’s profound impact. “For 90 years, Newcastle Airport has been an integral part of the North East – connecting people to destinations across the world, welcoming visitors to the region, supporting thousands of jobs and contributing billions to the local economy,” she stated, highlighting its enduring legacy and economic significance as a vital community event.

The enthusiasm of the young contributors was palpable, with seven-year-old Beaver James Parkin expressing his joy: “I loved coming to the Airport and helping to bury the capsule. It was really fun and I hope people in the future like what we put inside.” His team leader, Steve Warner, echoed this sentiment, calling it “a fantastic experience” for the children.

The Airport’s official 90th birthday fell on July 26, with celebrations extending beyond the time capsule event. A series of engaging exhibitions are scheduled across the North East region, inviting the public to explore its rich history and pivotal role in connecting the region to the world, a significant piece of North East news.

Complementing these events, Newcastle Airport has also launched a dedicated anniversary website. This digital archive is brimming with compelling stories, significant milestones, and historical photographs, providing a comprehensive online resource for anyone interested in the Airport’s remarkable nine-decade journey.
