Kadec’s formative years laid a strong foundation for her distinguished career. She demonstrated academic prowess early on, graduating from Fincastle High School in 1949. Furthering her education, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Madison College in 1952, a testament to her consistent pursuit of knowledge. Her commitment to lifelong learning culminated in receiving her Masters in Library Science from the prestigious Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1961, equipping her with the specialized skills that would become invaluable in her future endeavors.

She further honed her expertise within the Government Procurement Library Program, the Department of Agriculture National Library, the Federal Energy Administration, and significantly, the Environmental Protection Agency under President Jimmy Carter.

She received numerous accolades, including awards from her county and from the esteemed Women with a Cause organization, acknowledging her significant impact. Her contributions were further highlighted by a Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Agriculture and Commerce and a prestigious Silver Medal from the EPA, testaments to her invaluable work. Beyond her official roles, Sarah was a prolific writer, authoring articles and books, and a captivating speaker, delivering numerous speeches and presentations that shared her extensive knowledge.
Beyond her professional achievements, Sarah Thomas Kadec cherished her personal life, especially her family, exemplifying warmth and hospitality. She married Mark Kadec in 1975, and together they created a welcoming home where guests consistently received “the royal treatment.” She is survived by her stepdaughter-in-law, Rachel Kadec; stepson, Meir Kadec and family; nephew, Curtis Clark; niece-in-law, Holly Clark-Mathews; step grandchildren, Orr Kadec, Yoav Kadec, and Dan Kadec; and great-step grandchildren, Danielle Kadec, Noa Kadec, and Lenny Kadec, along with great-nephews, Brody Clark, Davis Clark, Nathan Clark.
Sarah’s vibrant personality extended to a rich tapestry of hobbies and interests that enriched her life and those around her. She found immense joy in entertaining friends, attending the Opera, Symphony, and various plays, and exploring new destinations through travel. Her intellectual curiosity remained insatiable, leading her to enroll in night classes at William and Mary. Unique culinary preferences, like eating watermelon with salt, added to her distinctive charm, alongside her unwavering support for American-made automobiles. She was truly “A beloved soul who touched many lives,” leaving an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.
Sarah Thomas Kadec will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she impacted. To honor her memory, a visitation is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Oakey’s East Chapel, located at 5188 Cloverdale Road, Roanoke, VA 24019. The memorial service will commence immediately following the visitation, beginning at 2 p.m., providing an opportunity for loved ones to gather and celebrate the remarkable life of this extraordinary woman.
