Trident Tech Celebrates 130 Youth Apprentices: Shaping Future Careers

Trident Technical College recently marked a significant milestone, hosting its 12th annual Charleston Regional Youth Apprenticeships (CRYA) Signing Day. This pivotal event saw 130 ambitious high school students formally committing to apprenticeship agreements with 52 diverse employers across the tri-county region, symbolizing a robust commitment to fostering future workforce talent.

The ceremony, a vibrant affair, drew approximately 500 attendees to The College Center on Trident Tech’s Thornley Campus. The morning was dedicated to recognition, professional networking, and a profound reflection on the consistent growth of this impactful program. CRYA effectively bridges the gap between academic pursuits and viable career pathways, offering students an invaluable head start in their professional journeys.

The day commenced with insightful remarks from Melissa Stowasser, Trident Tech’s vice president for community and continuing education, who underscored the program’s educational significance. Following her, Erica Simon, deputy director of the Partnership to Advance Youth Apprenticeships, shared perspectives on the broader impact of such initiatives on regional economic development.

A highlight of the event was a dynamic student panel, skillfully moderated by Ellen Kaufman, CRYA’s youth apprenticeship and marketing coordinator. Through the authentic voices of five apprentices, attendees gained compelling insights into the tangible benefits and transformative effects of participating in the program, illustrating real-world career development successes.

The success of the Signing Day was significantly bolstered by its key sponsors and partners. Regions Bank proudly sponsored the event, with additional support flowing from Apprenticeship Carolina, Bank of America, The Boeing Company, the Partnership to Advance Youth Apprenticeships (PAYA), the Trident Technical College Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Labor, all committed to workforce training.

These youth apprentices are now embarking on diverse career pathways spanning 18 distinct fields. This includes high-demand sectors such as automotive, baking and pastry, CNA/pre-nursing, computer support specialist, construction, culinary arts, engineering assistant, HVAC, industrial mechanics, logistics, machine tool technology, mechatronics, medical lab assistant, pharmacy technician, and welding, demonstrating a wide array of opportunities in skilled trades.

At its core, CRYA is a collaborative partnership spearheaded by Trident Tech, designed to connect qualified high school students with local employers eager to nurture new talent. Participants in this comprehensive two-year program are set to achieve multiple accolades: a high school diploma, a Trident Tech certificate, a nationally recognized credential from the U.S. Department of Labor, and two invaluable years of paid work experience, enhancing their student success.

Since its inaugural Signing Day in 2013, the CRYA program has experienced remarkable expansion, solidifying its role in cultivating robust workforce pipelines. It consistently provides students with a competitive advantage and early entry into high-demand career fields, underscoring the enduring value of structured youth apprenticeships in today’s economy and for future career development.
