UAE Tourism Soars in 2024: Record Growth, Spending & Global Appeal

The United Arab Emirates has unequivocally cemented its position as a global leader in the tourism sector, showcasing an impressive growth trajectory throughout 2024. A recent report by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) highlights the substantial economic impact, with the UAE’s tourism industry contributing AED 257.3 billion (US$ 70.1 billion) to the national GDP, accounting for a significant 13% of the total economy, underscoring the nation’s remarkable tourism growth.

This outstanding performance represents a notable 3.2% increase over 2023 and a staggering 26% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, firmly establishing the UAE among the fastest-growing tourism economies worldwide. Strategic investments in world-class infrastructure, coupled with a keen focus on sustainability and inclusivity, have played a pivotal role in capturing the attention of both travelers and investors globally, driving this unprecedented success in UAE tourism.

A significant driver of this expansion has been the surge in international spending within the UAE. In 2024, international visitor expenditure reached an impressive AED 217.3 billion (US$ 59.2 billion), marking a 5.8% increase from 2023 and a substantial 30.4% increase over 2019 figures. Domestic tourism also demonstrated healthy growth, contributing AED 57.6 billion (US$ 15.7 billion), indicating a comprehensive strengthening of the nation’s appeal.

Optimistic projections for 2025 further solidify the UAE’s promising outlook. International tourism spending is anticipated to escalate to AED 228.5 billion, while domestic tourism spending is forecast to reach AED 60 billion, signalling sustained momentum and continued confidence in the sector’s future.

Leisure travel remains the primary catalyst for the tourism growth in the UAE, constituting 84.7% of total travel expenditure in 2024. While business travel accounted for 15.3%, the nation’s versatility in catering to both recreational and corporate travelers is evident. The sector thrives on a diverse array of experiences, from opulent resorts in Dubai travel and Abu Dhabi to rich cultural attractions and globally renowned events.

International tourists are pivotal to the UAE’s tourism revenue, accounting for 79% of total spending in 2024. Major contributing markets include India (14%), the United Kingdom and Russia (8% each), and China and Saudi Arabia (5% each). This broad global appeal highlights the UAE’s effective strategy in attracting diverse demographics from across the globe, enhancing its status as a premier Middle East travel destination.

Despite its rapid expansion, the UAE remains deeply committed to sustainable tourism practices. In 2023, tourism’s carbon emissions comprised just 13.3% of the country’s total emissions, reflecting proactive efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of this flourishing industry. This commitment is integral to the UAE’s broader environmental strategy, ensuring a balanced approach to growth and ecological preservation.

On the social development front, the UAE tourism industry is actively fostering gender inclusivity and empowering its younger demographic. In 2023, women represented 16.3% of the direct tourism workforce, while youth aged 15–24 constituted 9.7%. These statistics reflect the sector’s growing role in providing significant economic opportunities, particularly for underrepresented groups, aligning with the nation’s overarching social inclusion objectives.

Tourism is undeniably a cornerstone of the UAE’s national economy, generating US$ 8.6 billion in tax revenue in 2023, which amounted to 5.4% of total government revenues. The ambitious UAE Tourism Strategy 2031 aims to further elevate the sector’s contribution to AED 450 billion and attract 40 million hotel guests annually, reinforcing the UAE’s strategic vision for sustained economic diversification and global leadership in tourism growth.
