James “Gym” R. Lowery, a revered Uniontown resident, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by the warmth of his devoted family. His long and impactful life in Fayette County concluded, leaving a profound sense of loss among all who knew him.
Born on February 8, 1942, in Uniontown, James was the beloved son of Anna Lowery, establishing deep roots within the community he cherished throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Comiskey, underscoring the deep family connections that shaped his early years.
A proud American veteran, Mr. Lowery served his country with distinction in the United States Army for four years, bravely participating in the Vietnam War. His selfless dedication to military service defined a significant period of his life, reflecting his unwavering patriotism and commitment to protecting national freedoms. The sacrifices he made during his time in uniform earned him the enduring respect of his peers and community.
Following his honorable discharge, James remained an integral part of the veteran community, actively participating in numerous esteemed organizations. He was a dedicated member of the American Legion Post #51, the Amvets General George C. Marshall Post #103, and the North Union VFW 8543. His strong bond with fellow service members was further exemplified through his involvement with the American Legion Riders, where he continued to foster camaraderie and support for veterans.
Beyond his military and organizational affiliations, James was renowned for his vibrant character and unwavering loyalty. He was cherished as a beloved father, devoted brother, supportive uncle, kind cousin, and steadfast friend, touching the lives of many with his genial spirit. His passion for life extended to his unwavering support for his favorite football team, earning him the affectionate title of the ‘No. 1 Steelers Fan’ among his acquaintances.
Mr. Lowery’s profound impact is also evident in the loving family he leaves behind. He is survived by his devoted son, Ryan Lowery, who resides in Uniontown. His legacy continues through his caring sister, Linda Richter of Uniontown, and his brother, Tom Comiskey of Point Marion, further highlighting the deep familial ties that shaped his existence.
The family circle extends to a host of cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever hold his memory dear. Among them are Jimmy Everson of Morgantown, W.Va., and Jackie W. Comiskey of Lemont Furnace, along with his niece Shaina Ganoe of Point Marion and great-niece Carla Richter of Lemont Furnace. These relationships underscore the extensive network of love and connection James cultivated throughout his life.

Visitation hours are scheduled for Monday, August 4, from 2 to 6 p.m., providing an opportunity for loved ones to gather and share their condolences. A solemn service will be held at the funeral home on the same day, commencing at 5 p.m., offering a moment for reflection and remembrance. The inurnment, a final tribute to his distinguished military service, will take place with full military rites on Friday, August 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Rd., Bridgeville, PA 15017. This ceremony will serve as a fitting commendation for a life dedicated to family, community, and country.
