For decades, the Fort Marcy Recreation Complex has served as the traditional site for Zozobra, hosting the iconic event since 1933, long before its designation as a city park. While the park’s existing infrastructure has generally proven capable of supporting the large-scale community events, the club has diligently explored future options, meticulously evaluating numerous potential sites across Santa Fe to uphold the well-being of all attendees.
Over the past several months, the Kiwanis Club actively engaged in detailed discussions with both local and state legislators concerning the ambitious prospect of constructing a grand, state-of-the-art event center in Santa Fe, estimated to cost between $130 million and $150 million. Such a facility promised a permanent, secure, and accessible venue, designed to comfortably accommodate even larger crowds and offer modern amenities, significantly enhancing the Zozobra experience. Regrettably, due to recent federal budget realignments and shifts in funding priorities impacting localities, this transformative project is no longer a viable option at this time.
Beyond the long-term vision, the club rigorously assessed multiple alternative locations within Santa Fe, scrutinizing each for its inherent suitability to host an event of Zozobra’s magnitude. Primary concerns during these exhaustive evaluations consistently revolved around critical factors such as public safety, logistical feasibility for staging and crowd control, existing infrastructure capabilities, and the overall impact on the surrounding community.
One notable site considered was Santa Fe High School, which, despite its ample space, presented a unique challenge. The school recently invested in replacing its artificial turf, an asset highly sensitive to heavy equipment and the extensive foot traffic characteristic of large community events. Further reductions in occupancy, while seemingly simple, would directly impact crucial sponsorships and potentially necessitate an increase in general admission ticket prices, possibly pushing them beyond $100. Moreover, such crowd reductions would unfortunately eliminate the cherished provision of free entry for children aged 10 and under.
