Goodsprings: The ‘Ghost Town’ Near Vegas Attracting Thousands of Fallout Fans

Just a short drive from the glittering lights and ceaseless energy of Las Vegas lies an unexpected counterpoint, a destination proving wildly popular with tourists seeking a different kind of allure: the historic town of Goodsprings.

This unassuming desert outpost, home to a mere 200 residents, stands in stark contrast to its bustling neighbor, yet it has become a magnet for thousands of annual visitors drawn by its unique charm and eerie mystique.

Goodsprings, nestled at the base of the Spring Mountains, was once a thriving mining hub, its prosperity tied to the rich veins of ore beneath the desert floor. Today, it presents a shadow of its former industrious self, leading many to label it a ‘ghost town’ that time seemingly forgot, possessing an undeniable otherworldly ambiance.

The town’s spectral reputation is further enhanced by local legends of hauntings and a dramatic shootout that reportedly occurred at its historic saloon over a card game, adding layers of intrigue beyond its quiet, dusty roads.

A significant catalyst for Goodsprings’ recent surge in popularity is its unexpected connection to the critically acclaimed “Fallout” video game series, a connection keenly observed by enthusiasts on online forums.

Recognizing this burgeoning interest, local enthusiasts, including Staats, orchestrated a “Fallout”-themed event on National Video Game Day in July 2022. The organizers anticipated a modest turnout of perhaps a hundred attendees, but were astounded when over a thousand dedicated fans descended upon the small town.

This initial success foreshadowed an even greater influx following the debut of the hit Amazon Prime series based on the game. In 2024 alone, an astounding 6,420 people flocked to Goodsprings, eager to experience the tangible atmosphere of a location central to their beloved fictional world.

Despite the sudden increase in visitors, the community of Goodsprings has embraced its newfound fame, with locals expressing genuine affection for the tourists and viewing this unique form of cultural tourism as their primary economic lifeline. Their welcoming nature only enhances the town’s appeal to these dedicated fans.

With a second season of the “Fallout” series already approved and rumored to feature elements reminiscent of the town, Goodsprings appears poised for an even more dramatic surge in visitor numbers, solidifying its place as a distinctive and thriving tourist destination in the Nevada desert.
