Piedmont Players Theatre is set to host the acclaimed indie folk band Honey Magpie on Saturday, August 16, at 7 p.m. on the Norvell stage, promising an evening of captivating musical performance and unique harmonies.
At the heart of Honey Magpie are the talented singer-songwriters Rachael Hurwitz and Pippa Hoover, whose collaborative efforts have shaped the band’s distinctive sound and lyrical depth. Their creative synergy forms the backbone of their compelling live music experience.
The band quickly rose to prominence, gaining early acclaim by winning the prestigious band contest at the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival in 2015, shortly after their formation. This early success set the stage for their burgeoning career in the indie folk scene.
Honey Magpie’s sound is a vibrant fusion, drawing comparisons to revered all-female folk groups such as I’m With Her. They expertly weave elements of pop, bluegrass, and traditional old-time string music, creating a rich and eclectic acoustic tapestry.
Their musical journey continued with the release of their self-titled debut album in 2017, which further showcased their innovative style. Additionally, they have been featured in the popular Oak City Sessions video series and on WUNC, broadening their reach to new audiences.
Kevin Dietzel, Managing Director of Piedmont Players Theatre, expressed enthusiasm for expanding the venue’s offerings. “We know when people think of Piedmont Players, they think of quality live theater performances,” Dietzel stated. “With shows like this, we want to start offering something a little extra.”
Dietzel specifically sought out Honey Magpie for this initiative, highlighting his prior positive experiences working with the group. He emphasized their consistent ability to deliver an “incredible live-music experience,” ensuring a memorable event for attendees.
The band’s artistry is characterized by a unique fusion of traditional and contemporary styles, incorporating classical string arrangements and lush three-part harmonies alongside pop, rock, and indie influences. This blend ensures a dynamic and engaging musical performance.
