Vice President Kashim Shettima recently underscored Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to reinforcing diplomatic ties with the Republic of Congo, highlighting the crucial role of President Denis Sassou-Nguesso in fostering peace and stability across the Great Lakes region of Africa. This affirmation came during a high-level meeting with Congolese Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso in Abuja, signaling a renewed vigor in bilateral relations between the two prominent African nations.
A significant point of discussion centered on Congo’s request for Nigeria’s backing in its pivotal bid for a leadership role within the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Nigerian government expressed its willingness to consider supporting Firmin Edouard Matoko’s candidacy for the Director-General position, recognizing the importance of African representation in global multilateral institutions. This move would further solidify the strong diplomacy between Nigeria and Congo.
During the meeting, Vice President Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, lauded President Sassou-Nguesso as “one of the greatest stabilisers on the African continent.” He emphasized Sassou-Nguesso’s wealth of experience and exposure, deeming them essential for guiding a dynamic and sometimes turbulent region. This recognition underscores the strategic alignment and shared vision for regional security and prosperity that define current African politics.
The Congolese Prime Minister conveyed a special message from President Sassou-Nguesso to President Tinubu, advocating for deeper relations and specifically requesting Nigeria’s crucial endorsement for Matoko. Makosso presented Matoko not merely as a Congolese candidate, but as a supremely qualified individual, whose three decades of experience within UNESCO make him an ideal choice for the organization’s top leadership position at this critical juncture.
Matoko’s extensive career at UNESCO, commencing in 1990, includes diverse and strategic roles such as Director of multiple regional offices, head of the Africa Department, and Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations. His comprehensive understanding of the institution’s intricacies and global mandate positions him as a strong contender, reinforcing the call for robust international relations and competent leadership within global bodies.
Beyond high-level diplomatic and organizational support, the Prime Minister also extended heartfelt gratitude to the people of Nigeria for their philanthropic efforts. He specifically acknowledged the Rochas Foundation’s initiative, which has provided free education to numerous Congolese children, including orphans. This humanitarian gesture highlights the deep cultural and social bonds that complement the political and economic ties between the two countries.
Prime Minister Makosso further commended President Tinubu’s impactful leadership within various regional and international bodies, including ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations. His expressions of sympathy to Nigerians regarding the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari also resonated, emphasizing the mutual respect and solidarity that characterize the enduring relationship between Nigeria and Congo.
The discussions underscore a clear mutual desire to elevate bilateral engagement across various sectors, from political cooperation and security to education and cultural exchange. This ongoing dialogue is set to pave the way for enhanced partnerships, reinforcing stability and progress not only for the two nations but for the wider African continent, driving forward a new era of diplomacy.
