Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has issued a powerful appeal to community leaders nationwide, urging them to actively engage their youth in identifying and isolating criminal elements. This critical call underscores a strategic pivot towards fostering localized solutions to widespread unrest and is seen as fundamental to sustaining national peace and stability across the nation.
The emphasis on community collaboration is paramount, as General Musa believes that empowering local populations to actively participate in crime prevention is key to dismantling networks of violence. By fostering an environment where suspicious activities and individuals are reported, communities can become vital partners in the ongoing efforts to secure their environments and protect vulnerable citizens from exploitation and criminal influence.
Beyond community engagement, the Defence Chief reiterated the military’s unwavering commitment to decisively confront and halt the persistent cycle of violence plaguing regions such as Plateau State and other adjacent areas afflicted by violent extremism. This resolute stance signifies a heightened military posture aimed at restoring normalcy and confidence in these volatile zones, with a clear focus on counter-terrorism operations.
In a significant strategic re-evaluation, the Armed Forces of Nigeria are recalibrating their defence strategy to effectively counter bandit attacks, particularly within Plateau State and all areas falling under Operation Safe Haven’s responsibility. This includes deploying enhanced surveillance and rapid response mechanisms, ensuring a more proactive approach to safeguarding communities and reinforcing regional security.
Further underscoring the military’s dedication, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, confirmed the forces’ commitment to sustaining efforts aimed at protecting at-risk communities. This commitment was echoed by Major General AE Oyinlola, General Officer Commanding 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, who stressed the importance of vigilant troops and strong community relations for lasting peace and security. Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan, Chief of Defence Administration, also highlighted the critical role of physical fitness for soldiers, stating, “The way you train in peacetime is the way you fight during war. When you are fit, you will be sure that you will be able to actually present yourself well at the battlefront.”
Recent operational successes highlight the effectiveness of current defence strategy and military operations against criminal elements. Within a specified period, troops across various theatres of operation successfully neutralized numerous terrorists, arrested 578 suspected terrorists, kidnappers, and other criminal individuals. Moreover, 134 kidnapped victims were safely rescued, demonstrating the military’s ongoing impact in combating crime across the nation.
A remarkable development includes the surrender of a high-profile terrorist commander, Ibn Ali, along with 151 other terrorists and their family members, signifying a significant blow to insurgent groups. These coordinated efforts underscore the multi-pronged approach of the Nigerian military to not only engage in direct combat but also facilitate channels for repentance and deradicalization, contributing to the broader goal of national security.
The collective drive to isolate criminals and bolster peace efforts extends beyond immediate tactical victories; it aims to cultivate a sustainable framework for peace and development. This integrated approach, blending military resolve with community empowerment, is crucial for fostering an environment where socio-economic activities can thrive, free from the pervasive threat of criminality and unrest. The ongoing efforts are a testament to the nation’s commitment to securing a safer future for all its citizens.
