Russell Crowe Rejects Shock $10M Offer to Sell NRL Rabbitohs Stake

Hollywood icon Russell Crowe has reportedly rebuffed a colossal $10 million offer for his quarter-stake in the beleaguered South Sydney Rabbitohs, a move that underscores his deep and enduring commitment to the NRL club. Speculation surrounding the celebrity investment has been rampant, yet Crowe’s recent actions and public statements paint a clear picture of unwavering loyalty to the team he has championed for nearly two decades.

Since acquiring a share of the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2006 alongside businessman Peter Holmes à Court, Russell Crowe has transcended the role of a mere investor, becoming one of the most visible and passionate figures in Australian rugby league. His initial $3 million investment laid the groundwork for a transformative era, culminating in the club’s resurgence on and off the field.

Despite the significant financial enticement, reports indicate that Crowe firmly rejected the hefty buyout proposal from an unnamed “business heavyweight.” This rejection aligns with his earlier dismissal of similar rumors back in January, where he publicly branded such claims as “bulls***” on social media, reaffirming his dedication to the Rabbitohs’ future.

The offer surfaces amidst a challenging period for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, who are currently enduring a nine-match losing streak and battling a severe injury crisis that has sidelined a significant portion of their top players. This tumultuous performance has fueled public discussion and media speculation regarding the stability and future direction of the club.

Intriguingly, this isn’t the first time speculation about Crowe divesting his stake has surfaced. Back in 2012, ABC News reported that the Rabbitohs had confirmed Crowe’s initial intention to sell his share due to personal reasons, with club officials Nick Pappas and Shane Richardson addressing fan concerns and indicating an understanding of his decision to prioritize family.

However, in a pivotal U-turn, the Gladiator star ultimately reconsidered his plans, opting to retain his quarter-share in the club. This decision proved instrumental in stabilizing the Rabbitohs, preventing a potentially disruptive ownership change and allowing for continued strategic leadership.

Under the collective ownership that now includes Russell Crowe, former Crown Resorts chairman James Packer, and technology entrepreneur Mike Cannon-Brookes, the South Sydney Rabbitohs have experienced a remarkable revitalization. Their stewardship culminated in a historic 2014 premiership, ending a 43-year drought and firmly re-establishing the club’s financial stability and competitive prowess within the NRL. This demonstrates a successful blend of sports business acumen and unwavering passion.
