Steelers Roster Shake-Up: Two Injured Players Released with Settlements

The Pittsburgh Steelers have initiated significant roster adjustments, officially parting ways with two injured players through mutual injury settlements, marking a proactive step as training camp progresses. These strategic decisions enable both athletes to pursue rehabilitation and explore new opportunities within the league, reflecting the pragmatic nature of NFL team management.

One of the players released was outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon, who had previously been a part of the Steelers’ linebacker rotation last season, serving as the team’s fourth-string option. Moon saw action in thirteen games during the 2024 campaign, even earning a start, although he concluded his tenure without recording a sack, a key metric for edge rushers.

Moon’s departure wasn’t entirely unexpected, as he faced an uphill battle to secure a spot on the final 53-man roster, particularly after the Steelers’ selection of former Ohio State edge rusher Jack Sawyer in the 2025 NFL Draft. This move highlights the fierce competition inherent in building an NFL Roster and the constant churn of talent.

The second player involved in these recent Football Free Agency moves was wide receiver Montana Lemonious-Craig, an undrafted free agent who joined the team this offseason. Lemonious-Craig, who played his college football at the University of Arizona, possesses excellent size and athleticism that initially garnered attention.

Despite his promising physical attributes, Lemonious-Craig was unable to carve out a significant role in the Wildcats’ passing game during his collegiate career. His path to making the Steelers’ active roster was further complicated by the team’s already crowded wide receiver depth chart, even in the absence of a definitive No. 2 receiver to complement star DK Metcalf.

Injury Settlements are a common mechanism in the NFL, providing a financial agreement that allows teams to remove injured players from their Reserve/Injured list, freeing up a roster spot. For the players, it offers a financial cushion while they recover, and importantly, the freedom to sign with any other team once healthy, paving their way for future contributions.

These Steelers News developments underscore the meticulous process NFL franchises undergo to fine-tune their rosters, constantly evaluating performance, potential, and availability. Such decisions, though difficult for the players involved, are crucial for maintaining competitiveness and shaping the team’s outlook for the upcoming season, as every spot on the 53-man roster is highly coveted.
