Sterling “Andy” Cicholas: A Life of Dedication and Community Spirit Honored

Sterling “Andy” Cicholas, a beloved figure deeply rooted in the Santa Cruz community, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025, at the age of 72. His departure followed a courageous and private battle with prostate cancer, marking the end of a remarkable life characterized by unwavering dedication to his family, diverse professional pursuits, and a profound connection to the natural world around him. His memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on April 26, 1953, in the charming Northern California town of Petaluma, Andy’s formative years were steeped in an appreciation for the outdoors and the simple, profound joys life offered. His journey eventually led him to establish deep roots in the scenic town of Santa Cruz, a place that resonated with his spirit and became the backdrop for much of his extraordinary life. It was here that he cultivated a legacy of warmth and genuine connection.

Andy’s commitment to education was evident from his early days, beginning with his graduation from Holy Cross Elementary and High School. He furthered his academic pursuits at Cabrillo College and San Jose State University, where he diligently earned an Associate of Science degree in Business. This foundational knowledge served as a springboard for his lifelong pursuit of learning and professional growth.

Throughout his extensive career, Andy demonstrated remarkable adaptability and a keen intellect, constantly expanding his expertise. He acquired valuable certifications in diverse fields, including Computer Science, Construction, and Real Estate. This commitment to continuous learning enabled him to navigate various industries with skill and confidence, leaving a positive impact wherever he applied his talents.

His professional journey was marked by significant contributions across multiple sectors. For 14 years, he held a management position at Graniterock, showcasing his leadership acumen. He also lent his talents to GTE and successfully carved out roles as both a Mortgage Broker and a Real Estate Agent, navigating complex financial landscapes with integrity. This varied experience underscored his versatility and a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

However, it was in the final decade of his career that Andy truly followed his heart, dedicating himself to owning and operating a landscaping business. This venture was more than just a profession; it was a profound expression of his deep love for nature and his innate ability to cultivate beauty. Through his work, he brought meticulous care and aesthetic appeal to countless homes and gardens, leaving behind verdant legacies.

Andy’s compassionate nature extended beyond his professional life. In a testament to his caring spirit, the family has respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to two organizations close to his heart: the Hospice of Santa Cruz County or the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. These requests reflect his unwavering empathy and commitment to supporting both human and animal welfare within his beloved community.

Sterling “Andy” Cicholas will be remembered not only for his impressive achievements but, more profoundly, for the abundant warmth, gentle humor, and boundless love he generously shared with everyone he encountered. His enduring spirit and the invaluable legacy he built will forever reside in the hearts and minds of all who were touched by his presence, serving as a perpetual source of cherished memory and honor.
